Last month I started to attend a short portrait photography course along with one of my class mates. Even though it was an almost impulsive decision, I did want to gain more knowledge and experience in this area of photography. Especially directing models, and working with light.
So far the experience has been quite rewarding already.
Studio exercise: High key & Low key

This is my classmate Coen van Eijbergen who recommended me to go along with him. During our first lesson we did an exercise in the studio where we were required to take a low key and a high key portrait.
In the pictures above Coen wears different clothes, but he managed to have almost the exact same expression and pose which makes the contrast between the two lighting situations all the more interesting.
Assignment 1: Portrait with a single source of light
The take home assignment after this lesson was to create a portrait of someone at home, using a single source of light.
In this case I chose to take my father and photograph him. The source of light was actually meant to be the sun coming through a window, however, as I did not have that time slot available I ended up doing the shoot in the evening so it ended up very low key.
