Unbelievably talented Makoto v/d Woude crafts amazing monitor stand

with No Comments

Please forgive the click-bait in the title, even if it’s true. Anyway, this week I got to pick up my custom monitor stand that Makoto van der Woude made for me! We designed it together and it turned out so awesome that I did a little product photography shoot with it.

Construction and Materials

The stand is a slim two-layer design meant to carry a relatively heavy monitor on top, while allowing space for two keyboards or panels below. The width allows for the placement of other items as well. That way it really becomes a height extension of the desk itself, instead of just an object to add height to a monitor.

The materials used are oiled walnut and high polish brass. The idea of the brass is that over time it will gain traces of use and age so that it takes on more character. So in that sense the pictures do not really do it justice, but the high polish is just too pretty to pass up for the idea I had for this shoot.

Design

These catalog pictures show the stand without any objects on it and they really highlight the reflectivity. They also show some of the construction and the Japanese style airy floating design that Makoto came up with.

The legs and two surfaces are separate from each other and connected through brass rods creating lots of empty space. Additionally, all the elements are quite thin or slim with rounded off edges. The ensemble ensures an exceptionally minimalist design.

Benefits

  • I now have more space to place or store thing.
  • It hides the mess of cables behind the monitor.
  • It allows me to have a large multi-purpose area in front of the monitor. Normally it would be occupied by a keyboard and an editing panel.

At any rate, as someone who is serious about fulfilling working environments and efficient use of space, I can really appreciate what this does for my satisfaction while sitting at my desk.

Conception & Crafting

I put some of Makoto’s pictures here which he sent me during the creation process.

My initial input consisted of a basic design, size constraints and a little list of purpose requirements. And at one point I had to choose from a number of leg designs. After that he went on with the rest of the stand, keeping me updates as he went along.

To be honest, I did remove a lot of the clutter that would normally be on my desk for this picture.

My thanks go out to Makoto van der Woude for his efforts in creating this monitor stand for me in between his other assignments.

I started this website because I felt the sights I've seen deserve a little more attention than what they receive on other picture sharing websites. I wanted to create my own little corner on the web to show them, as well as other things, to the public.
